Is Valentina Magaletti the most collaborative drummer this century? We’re not counting, but every release so far has been golden; her latest record with producer YPY / Koshiro Hino of Goat is no exception. Like drill and bass taken very literally, the tracks on Kansai Bruises whirr at high speed with power tool percussion and intone deeply with resounding bass drums. It’s a feast of things to be hit, smashed, and gonged, expressive with corkscrewing electronics and whirlpools of transient sonics. ‘One Hour Visa’ pops and bubbles, swampy yet bright and shiny like a silver tar pit of percussion, while the jazz swishes and swings of ‘Pesto’ make drum machines go haywire.
