As an album that took club music for its starting point and managed to mould something with a real narrative arc to it, Immunity lacked comparison in 2013. Having released albums since 2001, Jon Hopkins had some pretty major credits under his belt by then, returning from soundtrack work and collaborations with Brian Eno, King Creosote and more, to create perhaps his most fired up release, sending listeners hurtling down a bristling dancefloor wormhole.

Like an Odyssean techno journey dramatising an epic night out in seamless flow, Immunity is filled with dizzying highs and moments of fragility alike. The album broods with pumped up aggression, but also soulful melancholy; raw and punchy, but delicate and finely wrought. The record kicks into gear with the seething bass boosted cuts and tears of ‘We Disappear’, a microcosmic introduction where its propulsive melody pushes forward into psychedelically altered, glitched out landscapes, then disperses into the aether of classically minded minimal arrangements of strings and piano.

The raucous ‘Open Eye Signal’ plunges further forward in a state of driving energy, amoeba-like synths warping and ballooning in the infinite expanse of dynamic, headbanging techno stomps. That frazzled tension reaches a peak with the ferocious throb and thrust of ‘Collider’, its piston-powered pulsing four to the floor ripping vocal clips to shreds in this machinic maelstrom of a song. As the album develops, though, we hear the bravado dissolve, tenderness and reflective ambience taking its place. The purple-skied comedown of ‘Abandon Window’ from the rave intensity captures the static energy shared between resting bodies, gently thrumming and blossoming in the aftermath of the title track. It's skilful work, a unity of club carnage and catharsis, and a great release of tough, machine tooled music made with real soul backing it up from start to end.
