Lolina’s Relaxin Records continues to mine out the absolute best of the digital underground with the label’s second bounty of earworms from great area. A torrent of glitching percussion and beeps on the opening ‘light decline’ is superseded by dense strings, morphing into a shuffling, lucid slab of hypnagogic pop and alternative rock that each track’s sound toys with. With a ferocious yet laidback energy, great area explores the “twists and turns of the here and now” through stoic vocals, thick and syrupy bass plucks, and curious arrangements of synths and samples, jumping from foreboding, booming beats to rigorous rock and roll.

For fans of Tara Clerkin Trio, Tirzah, Mica Levi, Dean Blunt and the various Inga Copeland related projects this is an essential listen.
