The enigmatic Skee Mask has made a home on Ilian Tape since 2014 with an unparalleled clip of stylistically shifting 12”s, so necessary to the scene that he’s been granted his very own Ilian Skee Series to exact dancefloor destruction with double EP drops aplenty. In a previous life, he was SCNTST, releasing glittery, cinematic fusions on Boysnoize Records jumping from heaving techno and club records to puffed out hazy atmospherics. In some ways, all that has changed is time and a name; as Skee Mask, he examines the electronic continuum with a scientific, microscopic lens, pulling it apart and shifting gears at his pleasure.

Skee Mask’s second album for Ilian Tape, 2018’s Compro, was by all means a breakout phenomenon. Via innovative electronics, he takes a sharp look at the past few decades of electronica, breakbeat, and dance music and smashes them into cool, glimmering smithereens. Beats are sprayed with the vigilante attitude of a graffiti artist, yet expertly EQed to make those snaps and stomps extra gritty, and those crisps crystalline breaks really pop. Favouring revitalisation over revivalism, his rewriting of the rulebook led to remixes for veterans like Plaid and Moderat, alongside Leon Vynehall, Jacques Green, Gold Panda, and more.

As if that wasn’t enough to solidify his position in the game, Skee Mask’s 2021 follow-up Pool expands the breadth of his widescreen, multifaceted sound with almost two hours of glimmering material. Acidic jitters fluctuating over mercurial four to the floors, lasering effects-laden rhythms, blue-skied dubwise shuffled and shimmers; Skee Mask cemented his project as a place of seemingly limitless potential with a wildly adventurous spirit. If Pool plunged further into pastoral soundscapes, his 2024 album Resort was by turns completely idyllic. Ambient dub ripples wash away the ghostly resonance of earlier records, peppered with skittering torpedo micro beats and swishing, scrambling breaks. It’s a breathmint of a record, cementing Skee Mask as a refresher for the modern electronic scene and one of Germany’s finest 21st-century imports.
