Kieran Hebden is a connector of dots. His relative rise to stardom as Four Tet may have come as a surprise to some; a member of 90s/00s post rock band Fridge turned underground dance/electronica experimenter headlining the world’s biggest festivals? For Hebden and the heads who know, this was a linear buildup owed to working everywhere with everyone: from Madvillain to Pole, Omar Souleyman to The xx, Skrillex and Fred again.. to Burial and Thom Yorke. You could call him “your favourite artist’s favourite artist”, but what really drives the Four Tet project is an egoless, genuine admiration for music of all kinds.

Never dismissive, always curious, Hebden seeps the sounds of the world and its many people into his records with abundance. This bundle forms a sort of loose, informal trilogy of his most recent studio albums, which pick up and whisk together the breadcrumbs he has carefully placed throughout his discography: ambient sonics meeting crisp club beats, glorious MIDI instruments paired with noise and intricate texture, eclectic influences of hip hop, folk, Hindu devotional music, jazz, and abstract sound art seamlessly coalescing in electronic palettes.

2017’s New Energy neatly dipped into each area of Four Tet's production skills, pulling together the lighter ends of his house movements and melancholic lush atmospherics. Tiptoeing harp, mystical sparkles of zithers, vibrant hypnotic hand drum loops, all incredibly tender and worldly waves of digital instruments swirled into arcane, splashing garage beats. Reconfiguring further with robust rhythms and gorgeous ambient tracks helmed by dawn-chorus electronics, 2020’s Sixteen Oceans are the most organic, chirping little islands of song, jumping from expertly crafted two step dance pop featuring Ellie Goulding’s vocal clips to complex trilling melodies and twitchy technoid pulses. 2024’s Three unites the rave and romance at arguably the height of Four Tet’s career, all at once gauzy and smashing. Battery acid soaked electro heaters shift into rosy hued melodies and boom bap psychedelia, frenzied yet full of heart and finetuning an electronic sound bursting with life.

For those long acquainted with Four Tet, these albums are a culmination of the rich soundworld he has cultivated in his almost thirty year solo career. For the uninitiated, they’re the perfect gateway into the work of a central figure whose name seems to appear almost everywhere in the world’s manifold music story.
