UK post-punk godhead Mark Stewart completed his eighth solo LP The Fateful Symmetry just prior to his untimely passing in early 2023. Out on his longtime label Mute Records, the posthumous release sees the Pop Group leader still blazing new sonic trails nearly fifty years in. While his prior works certainly flirted with dub and funk, the cumbia sway of ‘Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime’ seamlessly retrofits his iconic bark to music you might even want to hear at your local abandoned post-apocalypse beach. The bleary-eyed and paranoid ‘Crypto Religion’ is more along his typical lines, though its biting commentary and white-knuckled groove still hit hard.
