Two masters of the form in Pan American and Kramer come together once again to produce glacial-paced, but often thrilling beauty with Interior of an Edifice Under the Sea. The duo’s second collaborative LP on Kramer’s own Shimmy-Disc imprint strikes a subtle balance between Pan American’s luxurious sound suites and Kramer’s naturally expeditious recording philosophy. The album’s title is apt, as so much of this music approximates the feeling of being dragged into the undertow of a great wave, or like a ship being tossed around a particularly stormy night. And yet there’s an eerie sense of calm within these song structures, as if a safe harbour is just beyond the horizon.
