New York rapper billy woods is back on his own Backwoodz Studioz for his another solo LP entitled GOLLIWOG. Inspired in part by a short story woods wrote as child about the eponymous monster, the album works as a collection of brutally funny and terrifyingly surreal dispatches from the frontlines of the America dystopia. Ghouls and monsters are nothing compared to the horrors of the real world through his pen, marking this a far cry from the (more) light-hearted tone of 2023’s Maps. That said, his compatriot in Kenny Segal does appear here alongside heavy hitters like the Alchemist, EL-P, DJ Haram, and Saint Abdullah who help bring woods’ dark and dank vision to life.
