René Pawlowitz’ 6th album as Shed delivers both beguiling ambience alongside some of his most brutal modes. Towards East drifts between subtle swarms of strings and crushing rhythm, sometimes together when the ‘Absolute’ carnage of a relentless ballistic rhythm forms a bed for strings to lilt over, or the churning breaks of ‘September 5th’ buoys junglist bleeps in a total deluge of cathartic sound. Elsewhere, these contrasts stand apart: the brutalist brickwalled UK garage of ‘No Dread!’ leads into the warm fuzz of synths on ‘In Between (Für Geli)’ undulating beneath spare plucks and a gliding violin.
