Since being hailed as shoegaze’s answer to techno when they emerged in 1993, Seefeel have made it their mission to escape genre labels altogether and plunge further and further into abstraction across their career. Core duo Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock have taken their time with the band, reconfiguring its sound and iterations in between decade long hiatuses. From early days with Daren Seymour and Justin Fletcher to new horizons with Iida Kazuhisa and Shigeru Ishihara, each of their sculptural explorations in sound have been well worth the wait.

The strength of Seefeel’s debut album Quique found early supporters in Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Cocteau Twins as the band broke from traditional structures to envelop listeners in a bath of guitar textures and looping rhythms. It’s an exhilarating rush of hypnotic drums, bass, and mantric lyrics gliding through a sea of harmonics, where guitars take amorphous forms born out of endless experimentation. It was everything a debut album should be: cohesive, niche, and excitingly nascent.

The band’s promising introduction with Quique brought them from Too Pure to Warp Records, where they became the label’s first guitar band with their 1995 album Succour. It may have brewed some cautious scepticism with Warp’s legacy as a leading dance label, but would later prove Seefeel as one of the most beloved and inventive acts on the roster, its molten sound evaporating into vast spaces of ambient dub elements and skeletal rhythms in a compellingly brooding new direction.

Just under twenty years later, Seefeel would return once again to completely strip and restructure what they had built prior, reborn on their 2024 mini album Everything Squared. Possibly their most protean work yet, Everything Squared finds a new clarity in the band’s alchemical productions: dub-indebted sub bass wobbles, vocals elasticate, rhythms stomp and spark, and the gentle throttle of guitars send shockwaves through the album’s rippling fabric.

Seefeel’s discography spans a wide palette, with a clear progression as the band have consistently taken sound as far as possible in their sonic laboratory.
