Few have cultivated a sense of mystery both with their persona and productions as Burial has. While many artists and DJs have withdrawn from public visibility in electronic music, whether through masks and characters or complete anonymous elusivity, Burial’s music perfectly captures someone who operates in the shadows. His mystification of rave and UK bass has practically embedded itself in the core properties of two step, and has carried his emotive influence on dance music to the furthest of corners. Even after two decades of his career, William Bevan still feels unknowable: will his next release be a coursing hardcore monster or a reflective lo-fi soundbath? When a new record could be surprise dropped at any moment, there’s truly no telling; his style has varied unpredictably over the years, and this bundle collects his seminal dubstep and garage LPs alongside more amorphous experimentations.

Burial’s self-titled and Untrue albums may be one of the finest one-two punches in electronic music history. Released one year apart, they have enshrined themselves as the premier records in UK bass, the first port of call for any fledgling enthusiasts, taking the street sounds and sub bass atmospheres of the dubstep scene and turning them inward. Misty voices call from afar on Burial’s debut album, emanating from alleyways with a pirate radio crackle, underscored by butterfly knife rhythms and overcast synthesis. Untrue further amplified that twilit post-rave gloom, with fractured vocals moving as hauntological ghosts through the puddles of South London’s club legacy, and beats blurred through rained on bus shelter windows.

2022’s Antidawn EP encapsulates Burial’s post Untrue movements as he travelled deeper into the urban labyrinth of his garage murkiness, vapourised into its purest essence with extended ambient sound collages. R&B and pop hooks float in the dingy metropolitan ether, driven only by the mere suggestion of rhythm as choppy ambience, soporific organ chords, and warped choirs take the centre stage. It’s perhaps his most sparse and introspective work, yet an alluring and vital counterpart to his earlier releases, building a discography that is ghostly, reverent, and dynamic in all its forms.
